NEW DELHI: Indian Oil is set to ‘STORM’ the Asia Road Racing Championship, becoming the first Indian company to fuel an overseas motoracing event, even as chairman Shrikant Madhav Vaidya said the company is launching fuel for Formula 1 cars to compete with global majors dominating the Grand Prix circuit.
Indian Oil will supply the superior grade gasoline under the STORM brand name for all the six rounds of the motorcycle race till 2026 under an agreement signed with championship promoters on Wednesday.
The championship began in 1996 and endorsed by Federation Internationale de Motorcyclisme (FIM, or international motorcycling federation) in 1997. It is recognised as the Asian continental championship for FIM.
The championship is currently divided into four open-make classes – the ASB1000 (Asia Superbikes), SuperSports 600cc, Asia Production 250cc and Underbone 150cc. The new Asian Superbikes class revved off in 2019.
Racing and Formula 1 petrol are high octane fuel not too dissimilar to regular petrol but are rated to perform under severe stress from very high engine revvs of 900 rpm and 149 degree centigrade temperature. While suppliers tweak the fuel as per the need of motorcycles or cars being used by teams, the quality is monitored closely by international bodies on various parameters.
