Password sharing started with some countries for Disney+ but it is expanding now

Disney+ started cracking down on password sharing last year but 2024 is going to see the platform expand its feature to more countries.

Disney+ is ready to follow Netflix’s suit and start cracking down on password sharing among its users from June this year. In fact, the update was shared by Bob Igor, CEO, Walt Disney, who mentioned the full roll out of this crackdown is expected by September.

The Disney+ chief pointed out that the feature will be rolling out in select countries initially but get a wider roll out by September 2024. Igor and Co. at Disney were probably enamoured by Netflix’s results after its own password sharing crackdown was adopted, which brought them more account sign-ups then they had in a long time.

The platform started this new rule from November 1 2023 in Canada by sending a mail telling the users about the new system and how they cannot share the account with friends.

The interesting bit is that Disney+ wants to be extremely strict with its enforcement, and those who are caught flouting the new rules could face actions like account limits or even termination.

Most streaming companies are aware of the sharing password phenomenon which eludes them of possible paying subscribers. And the new dawn at Disney+ with CEO Bob Iger tightening the ship means that the platform is equally invested in getting more people to pay for its service rather than watch through their friend’s account.

We’re eager to see which countries will get the crackdown first and will markets like India also be included in its ecosystem or it will be excluded from the program.
